What is 14k Gold filled?

Looking back at our products from the past several years we can't help but be proud of where our collection has evolved to, but we also have some not so proud moments that have us saying "wait, why did we do that..."

To be more specific, we went from carrying Gold Vermeil pieces (gold plated over sterling silver) to now primarily carrying 14k Gold filled and 14k Solid Gold. While we think vermeil is a decent product, it's still plated jewelry at the end of the day and will eventually rub off (we unfortunately found out the hard way). While we still sell a couple Gold Vermeil pieces like our Little Person Ear Cuff, our gold collection now primarily consists of 14k Gold fill and 14k Solid Gold. Here's why we made the switch and what we know about Gold filled jewelry.

“Gold-filled” is a USA industry standard defined by the Federal Trade Commission that legally requires 1/20th, or 5% pure gold by weight.  It’s a strictly regulated process that involves pressure bonding multiple layers of solid 14k gold with extreme heat over a core of high quality jeweler’s brass resulting in a durable, quality real gold product.

14k is bonded to other metals (typically a fine jewelers brass core) and is 30 - 50 times thicker than high quality plated gold (aka vermeil). Durable & tarnish resistant, gold filled quality product is suitable for daily wear and is also water resistant. Yes, you can get them wet! Filled gold jewelry is beautiful, affordable alternatives to solid gold, and can be worn by people with sensitive skin too!

Well there you have it! Expect to continue to see much more high quality products from us. We can't wait!  -RG
